Course description
The Course aims at giving a general overview of the juridical system which regulates international relations. Firstly, the institutional profiles of International law are examined, in particular: its foundational principles, the subjects (in particular the States and the international organizations), the sources (customs, treaties and other types of sources), the adaptation of internal orders to International Law, the peaceful settlement of disputes mechanisms, the unlawful act and the law of responsibility. The Course will then deal with some essential aspects of the subject matter: sovereignty, the use of force, international cooperation in several fields of action with reference to the work of relevant international organizations. Particular attention will be given to the condition of the individual according to international law, especially with reference to human rights protection, as well as the most recent relevant developments such as international criminal justice, environmental protection and development.
Prerequisites
The Course presupposes basic knowledge of the law and of the functioning of a legal order. As a consequence, students must have already passed the courses of Private law and Public law.
Objectives
The Course aims at enabling students to understand the dynamics of human relations as regulated by the law within the current historical context, which is highly internationalized, so to acquire the necessary instruments to act in such a context.

Notion of international law; the essential features of the international community and its law; the historical phases in the development of international law; the subjects of international law; the States and the International organizations; the sources of international law in general; the customary rules; the treaties; the sources envisaged in treaties; the relationships between international law and internal orders; the protection of sovereignty; the protection of State’s organization; the prohibition of the use of force and the United Nations; international cooperation and international organizations; international economic cooperation; the individual and its position in international law; human rights protection; the political and legal mechanisms for the settlement of disputes; the infringement of international rules and international responsibility.

Exercises
The exercises proposed aim at verifying the understanding of the main concepts and notions of the subject matter. By way of example, they will consist in the contraposition of concepts, or in the identification of the main features of a given concept; otherwise they could require the qualification of some paradigmatic situations or the use of some interpretive techniques which are peculiar to International law.
