In the second part the course deals the basic information concerning the statistical sources on tourism supply and demand (lecture notes available in the webpage).
Prerequisites
Knowledge of fundamental mathematical concepts.
Objectives
Obiettivi The course aims to illustrate the basic elements of statistical methodology and provide the basic tools for the investigation of tourism phenomena concerning both demand and supply sides.
Program
I. PRINCIPLES AND CONCEPTS OF STATISTICS i) The collection of statistical data. Identification and classification of statistical units. Characters and their classification. Statistical representation: frequency distributions. Graphical representation of statistical distributions. ii) Summary of distribution of a character. Position indices. Variability of the characters and their indices. Indices of shape. Concentration. iii) Analysis of the association between two characters: dependence, independence in distribution. Dependence / independence (on average). Correlation. iv) Index numbers. v) Probability: basic concepts and theorems. Random variables and probability distributions. vi) The simple linear regression model. Specification of the model. Estimation of regression coefficients (ordinary least squares estimator). Goodness of fit and coefficient of determination. II. THE OFFICIAL SOURCES OF STATISTICAL DATA: SOURCES ON TOURISM i) The tourism phenomenon: definition and statistical aspects. The statistical measurement of tourism: definitions and main problems. Touristic and non-touristic actions. Conceptual aspects (tourist, tourist activities, etc..). Economic activities related to tourism. Statistics and research for tourism: local marketing, the quality of tourism, seasonality of tourism demand, the customer satisfaction surveys. ii) Italian statistical sources on tourism. The statistical sources on the demand side: the Istat survey on tourism demand and other surveys concerning tourist demand. The statistical sources on the tourist. The investigation of the quality of accommodation establishments and investigation of the movement of customers in hospitality: the estimation of tourism spending. iii) The sources of international statistics on tourism. The Yearbook of Tourism Statistics of WTO (World Tourism Organization). Other international sources.
