Course description |
The module, whose title is “The ways of narrating: the Italian Novel of the Twentieth Century”, deals with the development of the Italian novel in the last century and focuses on its main authors and texts. Beside analysing in depth some leading figures of the Twentieth Century Italian novel, the video-lessons will get an insight into innovative narrative techniques and the author’s relationships with the literary tradition. Following this path, the student will be able to understand the importance of literature as a form and art of communication and of “translation”, in relation to Italian contemporary literature and culture. |
Prerequisites |
A good command of the Italian language and a school-level knowledge of the Italian Literature are required. |
Objectives |
The course aims at supplying a critical and more mature assessment of the Italian contemporary novel and giving the students a deep insight into the its issues and its linguistic and stylistic characters, without forgetting the European and worldwide setting within which it has to be collocated. |
Program |
Prof. Guido Davico Bonino’s video lectures deal with a collection of eighteen novels selected from the first and the second part of the Twentieth Century by whose analysis it is possible to retrace the development of the Italian novel of the last century and get to know its authors, issues and narrative techniques. |

In order to make the exam, the study of an handbook of contemporary Italian literature is required; this can be chosen among: Casadei, A., Santagata or "Manuale di letteratura italiana contemporanea", Bari, Laterza 2007, or "Storia della letteratura italiana. Il Novecento e il nuovo millennio", a cura di Giulio Ferroni, Mondadori Università In addition, it is required the full and critical reading of three of the novels discussed in the videolessons. |
Exercises |
Short exercises of textual analysis to be made on sections of the novels discussed during the course will be supplied. The exercises will be aimed at enhancing the student’s skills to propose critical interpretations starting form the identification of the thematic and rhetorical-stylistic specificities of the various texts. An additional aim of the exercises will be to enhance the students’ linguistic-expressive skills and to stimulate their creativity. |
