Course description

This module provides students with a practical opportunity to apply concepts of modern entrepreneurship and integrate knowledge learnt during the course and enables them to think more strategically when faced with the challenges of bringing new ideas to the tourism market. It explores how an organisation can encourage innovation and entrepreneurship and the processes used to manage enterprise.  Students are given the opportunity to explore their entrepreneurial skills by researching their own ideas – a product or service – and producing a business proposal for their chosen venture.       

 

Additionally, entrepreneurship module provides students with a deep understanding of the definition and scope of entrepreneurship and an understanding of the enablers and barriers to business start-up. Examples of entrepreneurs and start-up organisations will be discussed and students will be expected to draw on local, personal and general knowledge together with their learning to be able to identify the characteristics of entrepreneurial ventures.

Objectives

The aims of this module are to encourage students to:

  • Critically examine the concepts of entrepreneurship and enterprise within hospitality context.
  • Formulate their own concepts/ideas for start-ups, develop their entrepreneurial skills by developing creativity and critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making.
  • Apply theories and practice through the development of a business proposal.
